overview

FAB/MBBR Media

The Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR) is an advanced biological technology designed for efficient wastewater treatment, widely adopted in sewage treatment plants and aquaculture farms. Utilizing an activated sludge process, MBBR maximizes microbial growth within the aeration tank by suspending media carriers that provide additional surface area for biofilm formation. MBBR systems operate by suspending small cylindrical polyethylene carrier rings (MBBR media) within the aeration tanks. These media carriers, with a specific density of approximately 0.96 kg/m³, provide an optimal environment for biofilm growth. As wastewater flows through the system, air is injected to maintain circulation, ensuring effective nitrification and reducing biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), ammonia, and nitrogen.

Applications of FAB/MBBR Media

  • Municipal Wastewater Treatment: MBBR systems are widely used in municipal wastewater treatment plants to handle the large volumes of sewage generated by urban populations. The technology is effective in reducing pollutants such as BOD, COD, and ammonia from wastewater before it is discharged into the environment. MBBR’s compact design allows for efficient treatment even in space-constrained urban areas, making it a popular choice for upgrading or expanding existing municipal wastewater facilities.
  • Industrial Effluent Treatment: Industrial processes often produce wastewater containing high levels of organic and inorganic pollutants. MBBR systems are highly effective in treating industrial effluents from sectors such as food and beverage, chemical manufacturing, textiles, and pharmaceuticals. The system’s ability to handle varying loads and its resilience to toxic shocks make it ideal for industrial applications. MBBR can be customized to meet specific regulatory requirements, ensuring that treated effluent meets discharge standards.
  • Aquaculture Wastewater Management: In aquaculture farms, the accumulation of waste products such as uneaten feed, fish excreta, and other organic matter can degrade water quality, affecting the health of aquatic organisms. MBBR systems help maintain optimal water quality by efficiently breaking down organic matter and removing harmful substances like ammonia and nitrites. The system supports sustainable aquaculture practices by improving water recirculation and reducing the environmental impact of aquaculture operations.
  • Retrofits for Existing Aeration Systems: For facilities with existing aeration systems, MBBR offers an excellent solution for enhancing treatment efficiency without significant infrastructure changes. The MBBR media can be added to existing tanks, increasing the effective surface area for biofilm growth and improving overall treatment performance. This retrofit approach is cost-effective and minimizes downtime, making it an attractive option for upgrading older wastewater treatment systems to meet more stringent environmental regulations.
